Huck is gone for a walk.
I used to go for many walks. Four years ago, when that thing happened that we don’t talk about anymore, I walked even more because there wasn’t much else to do. Today, I want to talk about my relationship with walking and how it has changed over the past few years. Welcome to Monday, by the way. Let’s go for a walk.
Like I said, when there wasn’t much else to do four years ago, I took up walking as a hobby. In my heyday, I used to walk from my house into the town centre and sometimes back again. If I wasn't walking into town, I was walking to my local village. It was a glorious time and fed my soul. In retrospect, I would guess I was the thinnest I have ever been. My diet wasn’t perfect by any means, but that’s only half the battle. I had a good run. Then, a couple of factors changed things.
I tried obtaining a driver's license when I wasn't working. After several failures, I finally had a license and a car (the late great Gary). I was now able to drive anywhere and get around remarkably quickly. I didn’t know myself. I could drive to some walking hotspots in the town and on the coast in the woods. I had a great thing going. Slowly but surely, my priorities changed. Other things started taking up my time. Now that the bad times were over, I had to start from where I was in 2019 and get a real job again. I had to do some serious thinking. The world was back to normal, so I didn’t have the time to walk all day if I wanted to. The driving became more frequent, and the walking became less frequent. The time given to walking in nature became less frequent in favour of walking the busy streets. While it still “does the job”, i.e., it keeps me fit and healthy, it has started to feel more and more of a chore now that the surroundings call for my attention more.
I haven’t walked in nature properly in quite some time, and today’s blog reminds you, dear reader, that walking in nature is good for the soul and that I should start prioritising it again. I am going for a walk now. Hopefully, I will have done it by the time you read this. Thank you for reading, and thank you for your time.
