The easy part

I made a promise to myself this week. I am honouring this promise to myself. Let's talk about creativity and how easy it can be.

Since I missed a week of blogging, I promised myself I would make up for it this week. Partly because I know I will feel better about myself and my creativity when I do, and partly because I am keeping a physical record of blogs this year and don’t want to break the chain.

There's a weird phenomenon creatives face daily: resistance. It’s a resistance to creating because you are waiting for the best time and/or circumstances to do your “best” work instead of just doing it. That’s what I am doing this evening. I am just doing it. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be done.

I have talked to other creatives in other fields. Mostly musicians. They talk a lot about how doing live gigs can be very demanding, especially when it comes to travelling to the venue, setting up the gear, sound-checking, and generally problem-solving (if they are involved in organising and promoting the gig too). But what I find is that they more often than not say that playing the gig itself is the easiest part of the day.

That’s what I find when I finally get over the resistance I was talking about earlier. Once I get over the hump of starting to type, I get into a groove, and something resembling a blog finally appears.

So, if you are reading this and feeling like there is no point in starting any creative work, maybe this blog will motivate you to just start and see what happens. At least by the end of a single session of creative work, there will be something to show for it. You don’t have to publish it (like this idiot is doing) without a second thought or for the sake of keeping up a streak. Do it for you. I am doing this for me, and that gives me a sense of achievement.

I wasn’t going to bother keeping this promise to myself, but then Kurt reminded me. 364 words later, here we are. That’s enough from me. See you tomorrow for something music-related, probably. Thank you for reading and for your time.
