Huck goes to the cinema

I went to the cinema on Saturday. It was a great time. So great, in fact, that it’s what I am going to talk about today. Welcome to the blog. Today isn’t Saturday but Monday. Let’s talk about the cinema.

For a self-confessed cinephile, I don’t go to the cinema as often as I should. Partly due to time, and partly because cinemas aren't the cheapest these days. However, I saw a couple of weeks ago that my local cinema was running a one-day-only deal to celebrate its birthday. €6 a ticket. Pretty financially viable if you ask me. With that, I said I would do something I have only done once before: see two films at the cinema back-to-back.

First on the list was Toy Story 5. It is crazy to think that the first one came out the year I was born. As a listener of Conan O’Brien’s podcast, I got the inside scoop on the film every once in a while over the past couple of years when he announced he was going to be voicing one of the characters. I was even more intrigued when it was reported that the subject matter would be based on how screens have affected children over the past couple of years. So, how was the film? The short answer is great. Pixar are masters of storytelling and always manages to create things that appeal to the young and the old on different levels. I don’t know what they will tackle next. I am both intrigued and terrified to find out.

After a short break in between showings, I went to my second screening of the day. What kind of film do you go into after a delightful family animated film? A Christopher Nolan 3-hour epic, of course. After being bombarded with promotional content for the film, I had to decide whether it was worth it. It was. The Odyssey is long, but it oddly doesn’t feel like it. It manages to keep your attention, and I didn’t find myself zoning out much. I also didn’t go to the toilet at any point, which is a personal win.

As I said before, my avoidance of going to the cinema is about nothing more than it becoming more expensive to do so. I love the whole experience, and this little cinema day I took myself on reminded me of that. If I could, I would spend all day there. Maybe I should just make more of an effort to go. After nearly 5 hours of cinema over the past couple of days, maybe I will take a breather and go back next week. And the week after that. And the week after that.

If you haven’t gone to the cinema for a while and have been meaning to go back, just go. Enjoy yourself. Unplug from the world. Thank you for reading my blog today. See you on Friday. Thank you for your time.
